Ocean Friendly Gardens
An "ocean friendly garden" is one in which native and/or drought tolerant landscapes are planted to capture, infiltrate, and utilize runoff from storm events. The Surfrider Foundation- South Bay Chapter, who partnered with West Basin to create the ocean friendly program, introduced the concept to encourage plants that are native to the Santa Monica Bay coastal region.
Ocean friendly gardens prevent contaminated water from reaching our waterways and, eventually, the ocean. The ocean friendly approach revolves around the principles of "CPR" – conservation, permeability, and retention – which all aim to conserve water while still creating aesthetically pleasing gardens.
The program, which has now concluded, involved the creation of several "OFG" gardens in our service area. The gardens endure as an example of local, drought-tolerant landscapes for community members, and can be viewed at the following locations (listed in the brochure and on our interactive map.)
