What is firescaping?

Firescaping uses landscaping techniques and native plants to protect your home from wildfires. These practices, along with smart irrigation systems can help safeguard your home, use less water, and save money on your water bill.

Why is firescaping important?

California has dry, windy, and often hot weather conditions from spring through fall. These specific conditions in combination with climate change, can produce moderate to severe wildfires.

Firescaping allows you to:

  • Identify high-risk landscapes
  • Learn which plants and building materials help minimize damage
  • Get tips for reducing your fire risk
  • Make your home firefighter-accessible

Workshop Instructor

The in-person workshop will be led by the author of the best-selling book on property protection in the U.S.: Douglas Kent, MS, MLA.  Kent started working in landscaping for fire protection in Mill Valley in 1993 and in the aftermath of the Tunnel Fire. Since then, he has wandered the aftermath of the state’s largest calamities. And through those years, walks, and work, he has written the bestselling book on fire protection (Firescaping), authored many articles, and helped public and private clients throughout the state. His work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, NPR, LAist, Pacific Horticulture, and more. He is also author of six other books, most notably Ocean Friendly Gardens and Foraging Southern California.

Doug teaches at UCLA Extension Horticulture/Design and USC’s School of Architecture+Urbanism. His work can be viewed at www.anfractus.com.
