There is an ever-growing need for businesses to prioritize sustainable water-saving practices to meet their bottom line, especially as the effects of climate change result in more intense, more frequent and more widespread extreme weather events, including drought conditions. West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) continues to support businesses in this effort by providing recycled water for landscape irrigation, commercial and industrial uses. Most recently West Basin welcomed The Bolt and Intuit Dome to its growing list of professional sports event facility customers who will benefit from recycled water produced by the Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility (ECLWRF) in El Segundo.
The addition of these two recycled water sites enhances West Basin’s already notable customer base of celebrated partners including SoFi Stadium (home to the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League), Dignity Health Sports Park (home to the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer, and on the campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills), the Porsche Experience of Los Angeles and more.
Located just a mile from SoFi Stadium, Intuit Dome is an indoor arena in Inglewood that opened in August 2024. Serving as the home of the Los Angeles Clippers, the venue will use recycled water to flush over 1,400 toilets and urinals within its 18,000-seat facility. This water conservation initiative will save around 40 acre-feet per year (AFY) of drinking water—roughly 13 million gallons, enough to cover nearly 40 football fields with one foot of water.
Just up the street from ECLWRF, The Bolt is a 150,000-square-foot practice facility for the Los Angeles Chargers, which opened in July 2024. The facility features three practice fields, all of which will be irrigated with recycled water to save approximately 20 AFY—around 6.5 million gallons of drinking water annually.
The centerpiece for this recycled water production is the ECLWRF, the largest water recycling facility of its kind in the United States. It is the only treatment facility in the country that produces five types of customer-specific recycled water that meets the unique needs of West Basin’s municipal, commercial and industrial customers.
Members of the public can visit www.westbasin.org to sign up for regularly scheduled facility tours to learn more about the water treatment process. Visitors will also learn more about The Bolt, Inuit Dome, Chevron, Honda, Mattel, Raytheon, and other innovative recycled water partners who are doing their part to make water conservation a way of life.
