Available Grass Replacement Rebate for Businesses and Public Agencies Now Starting at $4 Per Sq. Ft.

Post Date:01/20/2026

As of January 15, 2026, the increased $7 rebate per sq. ft. amount has expired and the regular $4 per sq. ft. rebate amount has been reinstated for public agencies and businesses within the West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) service area.

Now is still the perfect time to save money while removing thirsty, water-wasting turf spaces in preparation for the upcoming statewide non-functional turf irrigation ban. Starting in January 2027, non-residential properties in California, such as city properties, office campuses and industrial parks, will be prohibited from using potable drinking water to irrigate grass areas not used for recreation or gathering purposes.

The current incentive is part of Metropolitan Water District’s continuing efforts to boost water efficiency by public agencies and businesses across Southern California to save water, reduce runoff and benefit the local environment.

Eligible projects can range from 250 square feet up to 200,000 square feet, potentially earning a maximum rebate of up to $800,000.

In addition, West Basin is providing free landscape consultation and design services valued at up to $5,000. A landscape design is a required document for the grass removal rebate application, so this added complimentary service will keep your landscape transformation costs lower than ever.
