West Basin Wishes You a Delightful Holiday Season

Post Date:12/17/2025

West Basin Municipal Water District would like to extend a warm season’s greetings to you and yours this holiday season, with wishes for a wonderful New Year. Thank you for practicing a California friendly lifestyle this past year.  By using water efficiently, taking advantage of the District’s water conservation and cost saving programs and attending the District’s water education classes and becoming informed on Southern California water issues, you are contributing to our mission to ensure a safe and reliable supply of water to our many South Bay communities.

As 2025 comes to an end, here are a few examples of how working together has shaped water-efficient lifestyles that advance sustainability and benefit our entire region:

  • The annual Water Harvest festival in October welcomed more than 900 people for a family-friendly day of water education at the Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility
  • West Basin hosted three free Firescaping workshops this year with over 100 combined attendees joining the sessions in partnership with the City Rolling Hills, the City of Malibu, the L.A. County unincorporated area of Topanga, California Water Service and L.A. County Waterworks District #29
  • West Basin hosted six free rain barrel distribution events and provided residents with more than 1,000 free rain barrels.  These 50-gallon rain barrels amount to 50,000 gallons of valuable drinking water saved each time they fill up with rainwater
  • Partnering with local cities, community centers, parks, the Metropolitan Water District and the Water Replenishment District (WRD), West Basin hosted seven free landscape classes.  A total of 192 residents attended the various classes that taught them how to remove grass, how to design gardens and construct California Friendly landscapes
  • Staff at West Basin held three free virtual West Basin Chats to help residents understand how to apply for the Grass Replacement Rebate Program
  • The inaugural Parkway Beautification Program transformed 35 landscapes, converting residents’ water-dependent spaces between the sidewalk and curb into water-wise parkways.  This helps to conserve water, reduce water runoff and save money on water bills.  Exciting news – the program will continue in 2026. Join the interest list if you want a free resource to make your garden water-friendly and inspire your neighborhood to do the same!
  • In collaboration with the Los Angeles Community College District, a new recycled water irrigation system was successfully connected at LA Southwest College that will provide irrigation to approximately 20 acres of landscaping across the campus
  • West Basin funded $24,000 to entities throughout the District’s service area under the Water Bottle Filling Station Grant Program, which provides public access to high-quality tap water and reduces consumption of disposable plastic bottles
  • California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services awarded West Basin $250,000 in grant funding to enhance its cybersecurity program
  • West Basin successfully advocated for the passage of SB 72, which seeks to improve the CA Water Plan to include a target of an additional 9 million acre-feet of supplies to help the State prepare for the impacts of climate change on water supplies
  • The district also successfully advocated for the passage of SB 31, a bill that seeks to help the state reach its goal of increasing recycled water production by 1.8 million acre-feet by 2040 by clarifying recycled water policies
  • More than 70 regulatory compliance reports were submitted on time and without violations to maintain the dozens of permits that allow recycled water to keep flowing
  • Completed the installation of 3.5 miles of the new Palos Verdes Recycled Water Pipeline project that is delivering the first recycled water to the Palos Verdes Peninsula
  • Supported the expanded use of recycled water at the Manhattan Beach Shopping Center for the surrounding landscape and at Intuit Dome for medical treatment facility restrooms
  • Celebrated the completion of the Juanita Millender-McDonald Carson Regional Water Recycling Plant membrane filtration system that increases low-pressure boiler feed capacity and reinforces our commitment to water innovation and resource management
  • Staff participated in 15 workforce development outreach events

We continue to celebrate our communities and our partnerships as we look forward to another year of shared successes in 2026!
