Registration Now Open for Firescaping Workshop in Malibu

Post Date:10/13/2025

Malibu homeowners looking to safeguard their properties from wildfire risk are invited to attend a free Firescaping workshop on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. at City Hall.

Hosted by West Basin Municipal Water District and in partnership with LA County Fire Department, the City of Malibu and LA County Waterworks District #29, the workshop will teach you how to use defensible space principles and fire-resistant landscaping techniques to help protect property during wildfires.

Leading the class is firescaping expert Douglas Kent, MS, MLA, a landscape contractor, educator and author with more than 40 years of experience. Kent has published eight books, including the best-seller Firescaping: Protecting Your Home with a Fire-Resistant Landscape.

Attendees will learn about the first five feet rule, what Zones 0, 1 and 2 around homes mean and what should be included in each, defensible space, fire-resistant plants, and practical steps and strategies to improve wildfire resilience. The workshop will also feature insights from local fire professionals.

The event is free to the public and includes a complimentary dinner. The first 25 guests will receive a copy of Kent’s book, and all attendees will be entered into a drawing to win a water-saving rain barrel. The winner must be able to take the barrel home that night.

Come for the class and leave with confidence in your ability to protect your home!  Registration is open now so sign up today to reserve your spot at www.WestBasinCA.gov/firescaping.
